I wouldn"t say it"s as tight or emotional as the first, but the new things it brings to the table are fantastic new additions to this world.
I"d say its biggest strength is the comedy, which has been dialed up from the first. It"s less witty and awkward humor and more blatant. Zoey Deutsch is pretty hilarious and you can tell she not only gave it her all, but was having an absolute blast filming her scenes. Sometimes I felt like they could"ve reeled in her character, because there are one or two lines where she"s already gotten a good laugh out of us but they added one or two more jokes that weren"t really needed. But in the grand scheme of her character, those tiny moments really don"t matter, because she"s consistently funny for a duration of the film and by far one of the best additions to the cast. Flagstaff and Albuquerque were also two really great characters and the two best scenes in the film involved both of them, which actually brings me to my next point; the action.
The action is also a welcome improvement. It relies less on comedy like the first film and goes for style, one scene utilizing a really impressive long take. You can tell where the cuts are, but it"s so seamless that it really doesn"t matter that it wasn"t all in one take. Props to the editors. The final battle was alright, but I feel like the action peaked with the long take action scene and it was hard to beat.
Overall, there isn"t much else to say. It"s a comedy that the filmmakers very clearly want to look as stylized as possible, and they nailed it. Even if some visuals weren"t as impressive as the first film"s, it more than makes up for it with some new elements that blend in really well.
The only major complaints I have are that the pacing gets a bit wobbly near the end, and the character conflict between Tallahassee and Little Rock feels a bit underdeveloped. We get one scene of them arguing at the beginning before she runs away, so it never really feels like Tallahassee has to learn to stop being overbearing, because we never really see him act that way. However, the positives far outweigh the negatives.
Overall, the cult following of the first film won"t be disappointed with this sequel. Was it worth waiting 10 years? As someone who considers Zombieland one of my favourite films, I think so.
